A RITE OF PASSAGE CEREMONY PLANNING GUIDE
The Power of Ceremony - History Maker
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, all your might, and these words which I am commanding you today shall be on your heart, and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and daughters, and you shall teach them when you sit down in your house, and when you walk by the way and when you lay down and when you rise up"
Deut. 6:5-7.
This gave birth to a vision to help my son with his entrance into young manhood. Using a variety of materials I came up with a rite of passage ceremony for Josh. We prepared (for months) together by going over what makes a Godly man and his response to the call of God on his life. We picked several men that have had positive influence on his life to attend this ceremony and asked them to prepare some thoughts on the subject of a Godly man. I asked other men who are important to Josh but live in other states to write letters of encouragement to be read at this ceremony.
The day of the ceremony came and we assembled at our church, the place where Josh will spend a large share of his time serving the Father. I opened by asking the men to be extra eyes and hearts for my son and acknowledging the impact they themselves have had on my life. Then the men began to share from their hearts and pour into my son's life with words of affirmation and support. After they were finished, my son stood and shared what he had prepared in the months prior to this ceremony. He surprised the men with words of encouragement for them and his own pledge to pray for them. Then it was my turn; I gave a charge for my son to make an impact on his world and to find his place in the kingdom. I promised to model and live such a life that would forge an unforgettable example of Godly man for him. I also presented him a sword (yes, a real one), to symbolized courage and the "knight" he is to become.
We finished by reading the letters, praying for him and listening to a special song I picked out for the ceremony. Through the ceremony my son saw things he couldn't see before. He has begun to see and to be identified with the community of believers around him. With that recognition comes the responsibility of a mature walk, but it is a walk supported by the body, with affirmation and love. It is my belief that this "rite of passage" will help my son identify and solidify his place in God's Kingdom.
